Home care services can be accessed through a government funded Home Care Package. A home care package is a tailored care program created in partnership with you, delivering the services you need at home so that you continue to live independently.
Home care packages go beyond what a CHSP (Commonwealth Home Support Program) offers and provide a higher level of customised care. They are funded through My Aged Care and available at four different levels.

Find out how Doreen, George, Jean and Michael use their home care packages to live more comfortably and independently at home:
Doreen has Level 1 home care as she has basic care needs and receives approximately 2 hours of care per week
George has Level 2 home care as he has low care needs and receives approximately 3-4 hours of care per week
Jean has Level 3 home care as she has intermediate care needs and receives approximately 7-9 hours of care per week
Michael has Level 4 home care as he has high care needs and receives approximately 10-13 hours of care per week
The level that you’re approved for depends on your personal circumstances and needs which are evaluated during an ACAT Assessment. Home care packages will take 12-18 months to be assigned, so the sooner you get started with the application process, the sooner you’ll be able to start home care.
Give us a call to discuss how the process works and how long it takes, or we can visit you at your home. Following are the steps required to start receiving home care support, from applying for a package, to arranging your home care plan.
My Aged Care will organise for a member of the ACAT Assessment team to visit you at home and talk about the help you need. It helps to be prepared for an ACAT Assessment to ensure you receive the right level of home care.
You’ll be sent a letter stating you’ve been approved for a home care package confirming the level of package you’ve been approved for.
The government allocates a specific number of home care packages at each level and you must wait a period of time for a package at your level to become available. You’ll go into the national queue which can take up to 12-18 months before a home care package is assigned to you. During this waiting time, you can access private home care which is available immediately until your home care package is assigned.
When your home care package is assigned, we’ll arrange a meeting with a home care coordinator who will begin developing a home care plan tailored to your needs.
