St Louis Aged Care selected as a Finalist in the LASA Organisation Category

Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) announced the winners for its Excellence in Age Services Awards to coincide with Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August, 2020. The awards recognise aged service providers who have made outstanding contributions to care and service development. Achievements are awarded in five categories – Organisation, Team, Individual, Next Gen Young Leader and Rising Star.

We were thrilled to learn we had been selected as a finalist in the Organisation category.

What initiatives at St Louis prompted you to submit the application for the Organisation category?

“It was St Louis on Sea, which is a first for South Australia. St Louis on Sea is a shared home, an alternative way of living a full life for any person who needs 24x7 care but doesn’t want to go into a traditional living environment.

Our owners bravely took the step to invest in land on the Esplanade in Victor Harbor and have repurposed and remodelled this wonderful home. We have eight beautifully appointed bedrooms. The heart of the home is all about the residents, whether it’s for long or short term respite care. When we won the award, we were offering a new offering for people living with Dementia for respite and Care.

Most of our clients have a cognitive or physical impairment which prevents them from living at home. Regardless of their age or ability, residents are encouraged to participate in everything that goes on in the home. Whether it be making a cake to enjoy with afternoon tea, hanging out the washing or pottering in the garden. They set the tone on how they want to live their life. For example, we don’t wake them up for breakfast at a certain time, instead they tell us when they want to get up. You can do that in a small environment. When you’re living in and sharing a home with people that support you and your needs, then you can live a good life.”

How Roger was able to return home

“Early on, Roger who has dementia came to see us. He’d been living in a traditional aged care home and his health was declining. He came to have a look at St Louis on Sea. It suited him and his wife who needed help at home to care for her husband.

Three months after being at St Louis on Sea, Roger was able to return home. His ability to participate in daily living activities increased and his wife felt ready to have him back home again. Now he lives at home but he still attends our daily respite programs, so he maintains the ongoing interaction with our care staff and his wife also gets a break.”
