How home maintenance helped Steve feel safer walking in his yard

Steve, 85, is mostly blind and lives on his own. His house needed some urgent maintenance repairs to keep the area safe. During a home safety assessment, it was noted that the gutters were blocked, old and coming apart, and Steve was concerned they might fall off and injure him or the care staff if anyone walked around his home and garden. The blocked gutters caused flooding and prevented him from walking around the outside of his home when it was raining.

A home care coordinator worked with Steve to assess what was needed to make his home safe. From this assessment his home care package was able to be used. The St Louis Home Care Coordination Team arranged to have his gutters repaired and cleaned regularly to maintain a safe environment. Steve also had some rails installed and had several light bulbs replaced. Steve was very grateful as this increased his independence to walk around his own home and courtyard at any time of the day, no matter what the weather.

Steve was also very involved in the installation process, and our maintenance team kept him informed of progress, asking for his preferences and input during the project. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and he says home care support from St Louis Home Care has made him feel very safe and supported in his own home, where he wants to continue living for as long as possible.
